Why a TEE is used

A transoesophageal echocardiogram, also called TOE, gives detailed views of selected heart structures when a standard chest ultrasound does not answer the clinical question.

During the examination

A flexible ultrasound probe passes through the mouth into the food pipe. The team discusses throat numbing, sedation, monitoring and consent before the test.

Getting ready

Ask for specific fasting instructions. Tell the team about swallowing difficulties, problems with your food pipe, dentures and medicines. If sedation is planned, arrange the escort and transport required by the hospital.

After the test

Follow advice about eating, drinking and activities after sedation. Throat discomfort can occur; the team explains the risks of the probe and medicines. Ask when the report will be available and who will discuss it with you.

Discuss your options

Bring your previous reports and medicine list to a consultation. Ask how this test or procedure would help in your situation, what alternatives are available and what follow-up you may need.

Why might a TEE be recommended?

It gives detailed views of selected heart structures using an ultrasound probe in the food pipe, when a standard chest scan does not answer the question.

Will I need to fast or arrange an escort?

Ask the hospital for fasting instructions and whether sedation is planned. If so, confirm escort, transport and activity restrictions before the appointment.

What information should I give the team?

Mention swallowing problems, food-pipe conditions, dentures and medicines. Ask when you can eat and drink afterwards and how the report will be discussed.
