Why an assessment is requested
Before some operations, the surgical or anaesthetic team may request a heart assessment. Its purpose is to understand relevant cardiovascular risks and help plan care.
What your review may include
The consultation considers the operation, symptoms, previous heart disease, medicines and activity level. Tests are selected when they may inform management; not every patient needs every cardiac test.
Bring the right information
Bring the surgical referral, operation details, previous reports and a current medicine list. Tell the team about any recent change in chest symptoms, breathlessness, exercise tolerance or fainting.
Coordinating your care
The cardiologist shares recommendations with the treating team. Assessment cannot guarantee a risk-free operation. Ask who will advise on blood thinners, other medicines and any change to the planned date.
Discuss your options
Bring your previous reports and medicine list to a consultation. Ask how this test or procedure would help in your situation, what alternatives are available and what follow-up you may need.
