Which arteries are involved?
Peripheral arteries supply the limbs, renal arteries supply the kidneys, and carotid arteries supply the brain. Narrowing in each location has different implications and requires its own assessment.
Deciding whether to intervene
Symptoms, imaging, medical history and other treatments are considered. An artery narrowing does not always require a procedure. Ask about medicines, lifestyle measures and surgical options as appropriate.
What angioplasty involves
A catheter and balloon are used to treat a selected narrowed section; a stent may be used. The technique and care plan depend on the artery involved and the reason for treatment.
Risks and follow-up
Discuss bleeding, contrast reactions, kidney effects and blood-vessel injury. Carotid intervention also carries a stroke risk. Medication and follow-up remain important after a procedure; improvement is not guaranteed.
Discuss your options
Bring your previous reports and medicine list to a consultation. Ask how this test or procedure would help in your situation, what alternatives are available and what follow-up you may need.
