How CT angiography works
A CT scanner takes detailed images after contrast is injected into a vein. Coronary CT angiography looks at arteries supplying the heart. It differs from an invasive catheter angiogram.
When it may be considered
The test is selected to answer a specific clinical question. Your symptoms, kidney function, rhythm and other health factors influence whether it is suitable.
Before your scan
Tell the team about possible pregnancy, kidney disease, allergies and previous contrast reactions. Follow the imaging department’s preparation and medication instructions.
Risks and next steps
CT uses ionising radiation and contrast can cause reactions or affect kidney function in some patients. The result may lead to medicines, further investigation or intervention; a scan itself does not treat a blockage.
Discuss your options
Bring your previous reports and medicine list to a consultation. Ask how this test or procedure would help in your situation, what alternatives are available and what follow-up you may need.
