A sensation is not a diagnosis

Palpitations are the feeling of a racing, fluttering or noticeable heartbeat. An arrhythmia is a problem with the heart’s rhythm. Palpitations may have several causes, so evaluation matters.

Capturing an episode

An ECG records the rhythm at the time of testing. If episodes come and go, longer monitoring may be suggested. A diary of timing and symptoms can help connect the recording with what you experienced.

Tell your clinician the full story

Bring a list of medicines and supplements. Explain how often episodes occur, how long they last, whether you feel dizzy and whether they happen at rest or with activity.

When it cannot wait

Palpitations with chest pain, marked breathlessness or fainting require urgent medical assessment. For non-emergency episodes, treatment depends on the rhythm identified and your broader health.

Are palpitations always an arrhythmia?

No. Palpitations describe a sensation; an arrhythmia is a rhythm abnormality. Recording and clinical assessment help distinguish possible causes.

What if my ECG is normal between episodes?

A short ECG may not capture an intermittent event. Your clinician may suggest longer monitoring and a record of symptom timing.

When do palpitations need urgent help?

Palpitations with chest pain, major breathlessness or fainting need urgent medical assessment. Do not wait for a routine appointment when symptoms are severe.
